Jane Jacobs Walk: Not-So-Missing-Middle Housing in Newton Booth & Poverty Ridge

What is "Missing Middle Housing" and where can it be found in Sacramento? Join volunteers from Strong Sactown and Preservation Sacramento for a 90 minute search for housing in two of Sacramento's historic districts, Newton Booth and Poverty Ridge, that fits the definition of "Missing Middle"--in between a single-family home and a large apartment building. This tour will travel about a mile on sidewalks and streets; all of the areas we will visit should be accessible to people with mobility devices.
Things you'll learn about on this tour:
* Missing middle housing types, with examples from the 19th, 20th, and 21st century--including some still under construction.
* Duplexes, fourplexes, and sixplexes
* Row houses, attached and detached
* Dingbat apartments and other small apartment buildings
* Bungalow courts
* Mixed use buildings with ground floor retail and upstairs housing
* Adaptive reuse of non-residential buildings to residential use
* How streetcar lines spurred residential growth, including the housing forms we call "missing middle"
* How highways affected streetcar neighborhoods like Newton Booth and Poverty Ridge
* How zoning regulations limited the construction of this housing type
* How historic preservation stabilized and protected missing-middle neighborhoods
* How recent changes to city code have facilitated new infill in our historic districts, proving that we can protect our historic places and still have room to grow
Registration is required, but nobody will be turned away for lack of funds. You can register for free, or you can make a $5 voluntary donation to support Preservation Sacramento if you wish.
Note: Parking in this neighborhood is limited; many areas are metered. The tour site is about 2 blocks from the 23rd Street light rail station and there is bike parking in front of the coffee shop and around the neighborhood.
