Preservation Sacramento's latest Member Tour is a visit to 1809 Uptown Alley, a recently completed conversion of a late 19th century industrial building to residential use.
The building was originally constructed as a barn for the horse and carriage of the home owner, Henry Miller, in the late 1800s. It was converted to a warehouse when Miller moved his sheet metal business from downtown to the barn building in the early 1900’s, and covered the original wood barn siding with sheet metal as a way to display his product. While the rehabilitation project replaced much of the sheet metal exterior due to its deteriorated condition, as much as possible was reused, and reclaimed barn boards were integrated into the new design instead of new lumber.
This tour will be led by project architect Matt Piner, who will explain how the rehab and conversion was designed, and developer/owner Karen Jacques, who will share the story of the building and how the work was completed.
This is a MEMBERS ONLY tour, and registration is required!
Meet at 10:45-11 AM on Saturday March 15 at the corner of 18th Street & Uptown Alley for check-in; tour starts promptly at 11 AM. Shoe booties will be provided.
